Getting paid for the job they are not doing

What is wrong with our doctors today? Seems to me they are more concerned about getting paid than making sure their patients are healthy and taken care of.

You are sick and go into the hospital emergency department and what happens? They make you wait for hours, then when you get in to the ER you wait another hour or so just to have them tell you that nothing is wrong and they send you home.

When my son was first ill, we spent the better part of 2 weeks in the hospital emergency waiting room and they always sent us home. They would take a look at him, take his temperature, look in his ears and throat, say he had a virus then send us home. We made countless trips to the same hospital, only to be told the same thing over and over again. Telling me that I was a first time paranoid mother.

2 weeks later my son was again in the hospital, but they decided to admit him. They did nothing for him that night but just look in on him now and then. The next morning they took him for tests. When he stopped breathing, they finally did something about it. And he was diagnosed with cancer (brain tumor), and passed away in 1997.

Out of all the doctors my son saw in the ER, only 1 came to apologize for not listening.

Reminds me of a movie I once saw about a doctor who treated his patients badly. He ended up dianosed with cancer himself, and the doctors he saw treated him the very same way. He took a long look at his life to see the mistakes and misjudgements he had made. If I remember the name of the movie, I will post it.

We put the lives of our children in the hands of doctors, expecting that they will find out whats wrong and treat it accordingly, but this is seldom the case. A little understanding and compassion would be nice.

Just once it would be nice to hear "everything is going to be ok, we will look after you"

I don't trust doctors anymore, and Heaven forbid my other 2 children get sick in any way. But I tell you one thing, if they ever did, someone better damn well listen to me!

The movie is called The Doctor (1991)

Surgeon Jack MacKee (William Hurt) has long learned to examine his patients not as people but as specimens. In an ironic reversal of professional perspective, the unfeeling doctor learns that he has cancer and realizes the businesslike treatment he has always doled out does nothing to encourage his -- or anyone's -- recovery. While forging a special bond with fellow cancer victim June (Elizabeth Perkins), Jack begins to discover the healing powers of love and compassion.

Where I am from, we classified as under-serviced as far as working doctors go. There are thousands without a family doctor, and it is downright dangerous. It's so true that emergency doctors often misdiagnose patients on account of not knowing the patients background. That relationship is so important. Having said that, my family doctor recently closed his private practice to become a hospitalist. The hours are different, the overhead costs are gone, but he also has a greater opportunity to take care of people who need the help. I miss my doctor, and fully trusted him. He saw my daughter pretty much from birth on. She is a healthy, happy little girl, and I know in my heart that he has a lot to do with it. He was there to support our growth. He was willing to listen and answer silly questions, but was completely prepared for the serious things. I'll miss him, and regret that he is no longer our doctor. I hope though, that he will continue to touch other people's lives like he has ours.
I am sorry to hear about your troubles in the past with doctors, and am honoured to be able to read about your sons, daughters, and husband. I wish you good luck and happiness.

From what I've heard throughout the years, the problem with doctors today is the fault of free medical services and HMOs and all that public healthcare stuff.

glad u had a doctor that you could trust and hope u find another.

messy buu .............. that may be it, but does that give them a right not to care about their patients?

If the doctors have the time and resources to care about all their patients, but patients also have to understand that doctors aren't gods and that doctors aren't making them wait just to be jerks, just like I'm sure patients aren't late to appointments just because they don't care about the doctor's time.

yes, but I also think that a doctor should take the time to check their patient out

I have to go see a Dr. every 2 to 3 months. I time how long the Dr. actually talks to me. Most of them average 5 minutes or less. The typical charge for that is $75. There is no excuse for it. Even with all the thousands of dollars that I spent, and all the times I complained about the same symptoms, it wasn't until I finally found that * doctor that would take the time to *listen* that I actually got correctly diagnosed. I trust my dog's vet more than I trust any of the doctors I have ever seen.
